Description

When it comes to bucket-list Australian outback four wheel drive adventures, the captivating Gibb River Road is a classic. A pilgrimage through the heart of the Kimberley’s red-dirt wilderness, this 10 to 14 day 1,134 kilometre drive from Broome (Rubibi) to Kununurra (Goonoonoorrang) is one of soul stirring natural beauty that’s best experienced from May to October. Fly into Broome (Rubibi) and lap it up on Cable Beach’s luxurious white sands before setting off to Derby. Witness magical sunsets off the jetty and marvel at the southern hemisphere’s biggest tidal waves on a scenic flight. The swirling, frothing waters of the Horizontal Falls’ clashing tides need to be seen to be believed. Unearth limestone walls studded with fossils at Windjana Gorge. Pitch a tent riverside in preparation for an evening of galactic spectacle against the unfathomable desert sky. But first, enjoy one final adventure - Tunnel Creek National Park, Western Australia’s largest cave system, is just a short hop away. Next stop - the Kimberley highlands and the rust-red hues of Bell Gorge, an oasis of waterfalls, bejewelled waterholes and life-affirming views not to be missed. Detour off the Gibb to rest up at Drysdale River Station, then wind your way up to the Mitchell Plateau for majestic rainforests, river-filled gorges and thundering tiered falls. Back on the Gibb, channel your inner cowboy at Balanggarra Home Valley. Fishing for barramundi ensures that cold beer is well-earned, then settle in heavenly sunsets over the Cockburn Ranges. Stop by prehistoric El Questro Wilderness Park for more quintessential Kimberley adventures, before rounding out your journey at Kununurra (Goonoonoorrang). Relax with an authentic pub meal, perhaps sampling the local barramundi or finish off on a high with a flight over the striking Purnululu National Park.
