Description

Tea Tree Creek and Cairns Bay are located 2 km west of the Flinders Blowhole lookout and 1 km south of the main Boneo Road. The creek splits the two sections of the cobble and grey boulder beaches that is set among the rugged, 60 to 80 m high, black basalt cliffs that run from Cape Schanck to Point Flinders. A pleasant 600m track through the fields and trees leads from the car park on Boneo Road through the Tea Tree Creek reserve to the rugged pebbled beaches of Cairns Bay. The walk follows Tea Tree Creek and passes through a stand of revegetated native woodland before opening out onto the windswept cliffs and finishes on the beach surrounded by spectacular black basalt cliffs. The high waves that break over the reefs have built two narrow beaches in gaps in the cliff on either side of the end of the track. The track is steep in places as it descends from the cliff tops to the beach. Swimming is not recommended as this unpatrolled beach as conditions are often hazardous due to large waves, strong currents and submerged rocky reefs.
