Description

St John the Evangelist Parish is a welcoming community of brothers and sisters in Christ and strive to be a safe community. The original church St Johns Catholic Church, was designed and built by Father John Therry in 1826. It was located on the hill overlooking Campbelltown and the scenic hills, land donated by convict James Burke (Bourke). A Cemetery was located next to the church. The first burials were in 1827. The hilltop cemetery got it most famous burial in 1837 when James Ruse — Australia’s first farmer — died. His headstone noted he “sow’d the first grain”. In the 1880's it was found that a new church was required. The foundation stone for St John the Evangelist Catholic Church was laid and blessed by Cardinal Moran on June 14, 1886. Further additions, new porches, transepts, and stained glass were added to St John the Evangelist Catholic Church to increase the seating capacity of the church and were opened and blessed by Bishop Thomas McCabe on 15 March 1964. At the doors you will be welcomed by friendly people from different countries and backgrounds. It is a place where you can find a sense of purpose and belonging. Come and see for yourself!
