Description

Follow the Miners Pathway and explore the legacy of this remarkable period through the grand old buildings and the graveyards, the rusting machinery and the rich stories of those who lived in these whirlwind times. From Paynes Find to Meekatharra, or Yalgoo to Sandstone you will share the adventure, the drama and the richness of the great Murchison goldfields. You can drive the Miners Pathway in either direction, though it is recommended that you start in Paynes Find and travel north up the Great Northern Highway through Mt Magnet, Cue to Meekatharra. From there the Pathway goes south-east to Sandstone, then west back through Mt Magnet to Yalgoo and finally south-east again to complete the journey back at Paynes Find. It may prove helpful to purchase the Gascoyne Murchison Outback Pathways Guidebook before you embark on your Miners Pathway self-drive adventure. If you would like to coincide your trip with the spectacular Western Australian wildflower season, then plan your trip around August or September. Please note; - When driving in remote Outback conditions, please be mindful that kangaroos and other animals can stray onto the roads (particularly at dawn, dusk or night), drive to the road conditions and obey road closures and speed limits. - Make sure you have good quality maps and plan your route. - Reduce speed on unsealed roads because traction often decreases and braking distances increase. - Check road conditions before travelling - contact the nearest tourist association or Parks and Wildlife office. The condition of unsealed roads varies according to weather, usage and grading. We also suggest packing 2 spare tyres. - Driving long distances can cause driver fatigue; stop and rest every two hours. - Always give trucks and road trains (which can be up to 50 metres in length) plenty of room; if overtaking, allow at least 1km of clear road ahead. - Never attempt to cross flooded bridges or causeways unless you are absolutely sure of the depth and road damage; most flash floods recede within 24 hours. - Be aware that there are long distances between settlements, supplies and services.
