Description

The Lyrics, Landscapes and Lintels Leeton Public Art Trail celebrates public art as a way to communicate Leeton's heritage values and the stories of Leeton's history as it relates to natural, built and Aboriginal heritage. This trail links Yanco, Leeton and Whitton through the historical stories represented by the Public Art, of Aboriginal heritage, the birth of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area to feed their nation, and the inter-war period. Feeding a Nation located at Yanco celebrates Leeton's incredible irrigation story. The Compass pays tribute to the engineering prowess of the Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission which was tasked with developing the MIA's intricate network of canals, channels and drains to efficiently and effectively move water using predominantly gravity. Wind Messenger located at Chemlsford Place celebrates the Australasian Bittern (Botaurus poiciloptilus) and its habitat within the Fivebough Wetlands just five minutes drive from this site in Leeton Shire. Fun to behold, Lighting Leeton located in the Leeton CBD are colourful lanterns that celebrate all that is delightful about Leeton’s rich Art Deco heritage. The intricate designs reflect the patterns found on the Roxy Theatre, the Historic Hydro Hotel and the Walter Burley Griffin Water Towers. Inspired by shadow play theatre props that showed popularity in the early 1900s, Charred Memories located in Whitton is a walk through tableau telling the history of the little old rail town, Whitton. The artwork is designed to be walked through to allow visitors to discover the panels that are laser cut telling the story of Whitton! With great interpretive signage, the art trail is a lovely drive, easy to follow, and the app gives greater depth in revealing the artist’s vision and the history of the community. Be sure to checkout this inspiring collection of public artworks the diverse heritage of Leeton Shire and the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. It is most definitely worth doing the loop between the Newell (from Narrandera) and Sturt Highways (from Darlington Point)!
