Yamba Museum

River Street, Yamba, New South Wales, Australia, 2464 Arrow
Every visit starts at the the Yaegl Cultural Garden at the entrance at the Yamba Museum. The Garden was created in close collaboration with the local Indigenous community, Yaegl artists and gardeners over six months and features a mosaic, two totems (dolphin and dingo), six Language Poles, and three Yarning Circles, the garden sets the tone and focus for Yaegl storytelling. The Yamba museum displays focus on the strong maritime history of Yamba. The collection includes objects that highlight the diversity of Yamba's history, from the telescope once belonging to Francis Freeburn, the first pilot and pioneer in Yamba, to the shark-bitten surfboard and mock schoolroom display. Research services include access to an extensive photographic collection, publications available for purchase and the impressive knowledge of the museum volunteer guides. Coach tours and school visits are welcomed and the Old Kirk can be booked for functions and events such as weddings or private exhibitions. Yamba Museum has a newly acquired artwork. Adorned on two areas at the front of the building are two stunning murals created by Yaegl artist Frances Belle Parker. The mural marries the native-planted Yaegl Cultural garden with the building and is called “Caring for Country.”
