Description

The Rainbow Gorge - Kirra Sandbow Circuit is located within K'gari (Fraser Island), Great Sandy National Park. K'gari is the world's largest sand island and an area of remarkable natural beauty. It was listed as a World Heritage Area in 1992 to recognise the island's internationally significant natural features: evolving dune, lake, soil and forest systems, the extent and age of which are outstanding examples of ongoing geological and biological processes; unique landscapes, which are examples of superlative natural occurrences. The Rainbow Gorge - Kirrar Sandblow Circuit is a 1.9 kilometre return walk of an easy grade. Allow one hour to complete this walk. Walkthrough low coastal scrub and sheltered cypress forest to the coloured sands at Rainbow Gorge (Kirra Sandblow) on World Heritage Listed K'gari. The highlight is the eerie lunar landscape of Kirrar Sandblow where a spring-fed stream creates small sand formations and has exposed the underlying sandstone rock. This is an area that affords walkers a special opportunity to indulge in some creative photography, so don't forget the camera.
