Stockman and his Mob at Horse Trough Sculpture

In the heart of the township of Urana, a flock of sheep can be found clustered around a trough. Two corrugated iron drovers herd the sheep, and a scrap metal horse also stands at the trough. These corrugated iron sculptures are a community art installation, where families around the area each paid AUD100 to get a sheep. The sheep are "dressed" in outfits according to the time of year. More information can be found at the Urana Courthouse Museum. The trough the sheep have been arranged around is one of the many Bills horse troughs found throughout Australia. The trough was donated through the Annis and George Bills Estate Trust which was set up following the death of businessman George Bills in 1927. George and Annis wanted to ensure horses and other animals had access to water in towns. Hundreds of troughs throughout Victoria and New South Wales were installed between 1930 and 1939, Urana's being just one of them.
