Description

The Bathurst Proclamation Cairn was erected by Bathurst City Council and the Royal Australian Historical Society at what was thought to be the spot where Governor Macquarie had proclaimed Bathurst a settlement on May 7 1815. The cairn was dedicated on May 4 1930, and was the site of Proclamation Day celebrations until the city's Bicentennial Celebrations in 2015. When new research led to the pinpointing of the actual location of Governer Macquarie's original proclamation, where the new Bathurst Flagstaff has been raised. Now the Proclamation Cairn sits as a reminder of Bathurst's history, surrounded by the heritage wall. Which commemorates the Bathurst citizens that who have contributed to the growth of Bathurst, including James Rutherford who established the Cobb & Co headquarters in Bathurst. It is a great spot to learn about the history of Bathurst and those who contributed to its growth.
