The Great River Road

A sensationally scenic drive toward the very beginning of Australia’s longest river, The Murray River (approximately 2,500 km) is the star attraction of the Great River Road. Flanked by national and state parks and river reserves, the River flows between the Snowy Mountains and Lake Hume and provides a perfect habitat for native animal and plant species. Travelling toward the source of the Murray from the west, start your drive at Bellbridge. Hug the foreshore of Lake Hume as you head eastward, you will soon discover where the Murray River flows into Lake Hume. The unique upper reaches of the River become narrower, cleaner and clearer. Leading you on toward sweeping views of the Snowy Mountains. Snowcapped perfection in winter and early spring. Approaching from the rooftop Australia, the township of Khancoban lies at the western foothills of the Kosciuszko National Park and at the eastern end of the Great River Road.
