Description

Located just off the South Gippsland Highway, 5km from Sale, the Sale Swing Bridge was the first movable bridge constructed in Victoria. The National Trust classified Swing Bridge is located at the junction of the Thomson and Latrobe Rivers. It is the oldest surviving swing bridge in Australia, being constructed from 1880-1883, and is regarded as one of the engineering wonders of Gippsland. As the name suggests, the bridge was designed to swing open to allow shipping to and from the Port of Sale. The bridge, built of cast iron cylinders and fittings and wrought iron trusses is 61m long, with a central swing span of almost 46m. The bridge still opens today, and is a wonderful experience to see.
