This landscape holds two kinds of history at once, mountains shaped over millions of years and stories painted onto their rock shelters for thousands more. Gariwerd's rock art forms the largest collection of its kind anywhere in south-eastern Australia, deeply significant to the Djab Wurrung and Jardwadjali peoples whose Country this is. The mountains rise sharply enough to make climbers work for every view. This is a place that asks to be looked at slowly.
