We’ve made it very easy by starting the walk in Roma, a quick flight from Brisbane averting the 12 hr drive, but this is made possible only with Auswalk. There is no other way to get to remote Carnarvon but to drive, acting as a gatekeeper, creating an atmosphere of splendid isolation in a unique natural wonderland. Spring fed Carnarvon Creek carves a twisted route through the spectacular sandstone gorge. The clarity of the permanent water is particularly impressive. No wonder it took 10000 years to filter through the sandstone to get to the creek; a creek that nurtures strands of cabbage palms, pockets of remnant rainforest and rare king ferns with five metre fronds, a landscape with a prehistoric feel.
