Moranbah, established 35 years ago, was created for miners and their families. The large red dragline bucket at the town's entrance is a tribute to the coal mining industry's contribution to the area. Town facilities include an aquatic centre, large shopping centre, specialty stores and many accommodation and dining options. The Musical Railway and Musical Table and Chairs at the Town Square, are a public art project where visitors can play and make music. The Peak Downs Coal Mine is situated 40 kilometres from Moranbah. It produces eight million tonnes of raw coal per year which is mined, crushed, washed and cleaned to produce five million tonnes of coking coal, exported to fifteen international destinations. The Peak Downs Mine Tour operates on the second Wednesday of every month.
