Perched on a plateau of gentle hills and wide panoramas, Monto is home to charming restored buildings dating back to the 1930s and 1950s. A historical museum here captures its mining, dairy and timber industries. Monto is also the gateway to Cania Gorge National Park. This beautiful landscape is punctuated with towering, ochre-coloured sandstone cliffs, gorges, caves, Aboriginal freehand art and incredible walks. Find out about the park's wildlife, vegetation and history at the main picnic area beside pretty Three Moon Creek. There's eight walks there including the 300 metre return picnic area circuit along Three Moon Creek and a 1.4 kilometre return walk from the car park to mining relics at the historic Shamrock goldmine site. The longest track, 5.6 kilometres, takes in the Giant's Chair lookout. Watch for platypus in the creek and peregrine falcons soaring above cliffs. There's more 50 plant species and in excess of 90 species of birds and in spring the red kurrajong flowers in bloom. Don't miss Cania Lake, 11 kilometres from the picnic area. It sits on the banks of Three Moon Creek which is a tributary of the Burnett River.
