Best known for its sugar cane fields which give rise to the world-renowned Bundaberg Rum, Bundaberg is a modern, progressive city. Known as Bundy by locals, it offers a blend of rural and coastal experiences from its locally-produced food to its beaches. Mon Repos beach is where the loggerhead turtles return each year to lay their eggs, and then a few months later, the hatchlings take their first tentative steps towards the ocean. There's also museums, historic homes including that of aviator Bert Hinkler, and regional galleries to explore. Bundaberg is also a good launch pad from which to access the Southern Great Barrier Reef islands such as Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliot Islands.
