Stock up on fuel, food and water supplies in Derby before heading east on the Gibb River Road. The first 70 Kilometres are sealed, with a gravel road (Fairfield Road) leading to Windjana Gorge National Park. Follow the three-and-a-half-kilometre walk trail to see Windjana’s abundant wildlife and sheer 100-metre walls carved out of the ancient Devonian reef system. Due to their close proximity, it’s easy to visit Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek national parks in a single day. Take a good torch and a pair of sneakers (that may get wet), and head 750 metres into the depths of Western Australia’s oldest cave system at Tunnel Creek – entering a subterranean world of bats and fresh water crocodiles. Head south to rejoin the sealed Great Northern Highway towards Fitzroy Crossing. Camping is not permitted at Tunnel Creek, but there is a campground in Windjana Gorge National Park, with showers and toilets (fees apply).
