From Perth, head south along Albany Highway, via Armadale, to reach Sullivan Rock. Allow at least an hour and a quarter to reach the picnic area, nine kilometres south of Jarrahdale Road. From here you can step onto one of the world’s greatest long distance walking trails – the legendary Bibbulmun Track, which stretches almost 1000 kilometres from the Perth Hills to Albany on the south coast. For a comfortable one-hour walk, take the Sullivan Rock Trail, passing picturesque rock pools, granite honey-myrtle, tiny cream Trymalium masses, eye-catching mauve calytrix and pink and blue andersonia. Next, continue south on the Albany Highway, past Bannister, to reach the wildflower hotspot of Crossman Reserve – a haven for a wide range of orchids, including the rattle beaks, which only flower after fire. Take a lunch break in the Wheatbelt town of Williams, paying a visit to the Woolshed interpretive centre for a little local history and woolly souvenirs. Alternatively, head for the picnic areas of Martup Pool (south of the Woodanilling turn-off on the Albany Highway), or Boscabel (opposite the Boscabel turn-off). At Martup Pool picnic area, you can take a short walk to the pool, which is shaded by paperbark trees and home to several varieties of water birds. If you choose to lunch at Boscabel, expect more wildflower delights, including yellow hibbertias, kangaroo paws, Verticordias, white starbush and pea plants.
