Make a morning call at the Australian Bush Heritage Reserve, by taking the left turn onto Cherry Tree Pool Road, north of Kojonup. After almost 12 kilometres on the sealed road, follow the gravel road then turn left onto Mission Road. The reserve is mostly wandoo woodland, with open scrubland, melaleuca thickets, herbs, heaths, sedges and orchids. It’s also home to some 80 species of native birds, and keen birdwatchers may spot the rare crested shrike-tit, the peregrine falcon and Carnaby's black cockatoo. Return to Kojonup for lunch overlooking the Australian rose maze at The Kodja Place, followed by a walk around the interpretive centre for fascinating insights into ancient Nyoongar culture and enchanting stories from the early settlers and present day locals. Pick up maps and brochures from The Kodja Place for an afternoon of wildflowers and wildlife at Myrtle Benn Flora & Fauna Sanctuary and Farrar Dam Reserve. Just north of the Kojonup-Katanning Road turn-off, take the left-turn onto Robinson Road, leading to Soldier Road, before turning right onto Tunney Road to reach Myrtle Benn Sanctuary. Here, you can take your pick from nine wonderful walking trails, where you may catch a glimpse of many native birds, as well as a rich diversity of orchid species, including the red-tongued spider, mantis clubbed spider, white spider and pink enamel. Following the Blackwood Road west from Kojonup for about seven kilometres, you’ll reach the old railway dam and Farra Reserve. Water birds, frogs and long-necked tortoise are often spotted here, as well as Kojonup's floral emblem – the red Leschenaultia. Gravel areas of the reserve are also havens for the bright blue leschenaultia, the white candle flowers of the stackhousia, numerous orchids and four species of the brilliant orange gastrolobium peas. Return to Kojonup for your overnight stay.
