Pick up picnic supplies in Kojonup or Cranbrook for a full day exploring Western Australia’s only mountain range, and some of Australia’s most unique flora and fauna, in the Stirling Range National Park. To get there, travel south on Albany Highway to Cranbrook, then east on Salt River Road, Formby South Road, Chester Pass Road and Stirling Range Drive. More than 100 species of birds and 1,500 varieties of plants thrive in this striking landscape, including the Queen of Sheba orchid, mountain bells, banksias, dryandras and many wildflowers that aren’t found anywhere else on Earth. Spend the afternoon exploring the Bluff Knoll Trail, which leads to the South West’s tallest peak and is a particularly good place to spot wildflowers. You can view them on the trail to the base of the peak between late August and October, and at higher altitudes between October and December. You can stay overnight here in the park’s designated camping grounds, or choose from a range of cottages, bed and breakfasts, and budget accommodation in the Stirling Range and Mount Barker region.
