Following the highway south to Albany, take Frenchman Bay Road to reach Torndirrup National Park – one of the most dramatic coastlines in Western Australia. Allow at least 45 minutes to reach the park entrance and venture onto the peninsular to see how the powerful Southern Ocean has sculpted the granite cliffs into striking features, including The Gap, Natural Bridge and The Blowholes. Next, visit the Park’s Stony Hill and the windfarm, where paths and boardwalks lead you along granite headlands to coastal bushlands and heartlands filled with pink pimelea ferruginea and pimelea rosea, blue scaevola nitida and sticky tailflower in spring. Stay on the peninsular and visit the Botanic Garden of Discovery Bay for a picnic lunch amongst more than 100,000 native plant species. In fact, this one square kilometre contains more plant species than the entire European continent. Spend the rest of your afternoon discovering Albany’s dramatic whaling, convict and settler history via the heritage trails and museums, including Discovery Bay’s historic whaling station – the only museum of its kind in the world to be housed in a formerly fully-operational whaling station. Or, head for the National Anzac Centre for one of the most moving experiences of World War history.
