Head out to the gorges of the Coongan River near Marble Bar for an early morning swim or bushwalk among the red river gums, coolibah and acacia. A short drive west, brings you to the A-class reserve at Chinaman's Pool. If you have a 4WD, head out to Coppin's Gap, Doolena Gorge or Carawine Gorge. Retrace your tracks back to Port Hedland and continue along the North West Coast Highway to Dampier. While passing through the hills near Whim Creek, look for the beautiful flowers of the corkwood tree. You can choose to break up the five and a half hour journey with a visit to the restored heritage settlement of Roebourne. Once the capital of the North West, it’s the oldest surviving town between Geraldton and Darwin. Take a wander through the museum and art gallery, housed in the Old Roebourne Gaol and get a feel for convict and colonial life in the 19th century. From here, you’re just 45 minutes’ drive from Dampier for your overnight stay.
