Take the Kwinana Freeway and Mundijong Road (quickest route) or the South Western Highway and Jarrahdale Road to Western Australia’s first timber town - Jarrahdale. Here, surrounded by jarrah forest on the Darling Range, you can hike a section of the Bibbulmun Track - one of the world's greatest long-distance walking trails winding nearly 1,000 kilometres through a vast corridor of flora to the southern coast. The town’s National Trust-listed timber cottages will also give you glimpses of its early life as an agricultural community and thriving timber town. Head out to nearby Serpentine Dam for lunch beside the waters of one of Perth’s biggest dams. Or take a picnic into the forests of Serpentine National Park where wattle, kangaroo paws, Hakea, Hardenbergia, Chorizema, Verticordia and orchids abound. Alternatively, make the short drive to Dwellingup to dine beside the rolling vineyards of the region’s wineries. If you opt to lunch in the forests of Serpentine, it’s just a 40 to 50-minute drive via the South Western Highway and Del Park Road to Dwellingup. Call in at the Dwellingup History and Visitor Information Centre for the best places to see wildflowers, including the blue squill, tiny star and donkey orchids, golden Dryandra, sea-urchin Hakeas, yellow and pink Verticordias, red bottlebrush and citrus-scented Darwinia. A short drive from town, the Forest Heritage Centre offers you a window to the region's natural treasures with three viewing towers taking you up into the forest canopy. Set up camp under the jarrah trees and star-filled skies, or stay in Dwellingup's hotel, chalets, backpacker hostels or caravan park and dine out at the region’s restaurants.
