For a mini off-road adventure through the karri forest, head north on Caves Road to join Boranup Forest Drive (gravel track suitable for 2WD). Look out for deep blue karri Hovea, trailing Clematis, yellow cone bushes, Patersonia and orchids such as forest mantis, cowslip, common donkey and pink fairy. Then take the plunge beneath the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge on a guided tour of Mammoth Cave, Lake Cave, or Jewel Cave – home to one of the longest straw stalactites on show in the world. Emerging from the caves, you’re just a 17-minute drive away from the premium wine, big-wave surf and gourmet delights of Margaret River. Here, you can taste the creations of some of Australia’s top-rated chefs over lunch at a local winery. Or take your pick from the region’s fine artisanal produce and head down to the riverbanks for a picnic. Pick up maps from the Margaret River Visitor Centre and choose from one of the many walk trails that start from town, including the Margaret River Heritage Trails, Rails to Trails, and the Carters Road walk trails. Among the karri and jarrah trees, you’re likely to spot blooms of Hovea, Hibbertia, wattles, yellow and purple flags, flame and brown peas and a diverse range of native orchids, including flying duck, king-in-his-carriage and rattle beaks.
