Make the 25-minute drive east to Ambergate Reserve where an easy walk trail through the 70 hectare reserve features more than 170 native plant species, including blue smokebush, Boronia, wattle, red Grevillea and white myrtle. Just a ten-minute drive away is a very different but equally biodiverse attraction, Busselton Jetty – the longest timber jetty in the southern hemisphere. Walk the 1.8-kilometre jetty, ride the train, or take a tour of the Underwater Observatory – your window to Australia’s greatest artificial reef. Lunch on Busselton foreshore and admire the view of the jetty and calm, clear waters of Geographe Bay. Just a short walk from here, you can see the works of Western Australian artists in the modern ArtGeo Gallery and Courthouse Arts Complex. Halfway between Busselton and Bunbury, the Ludlow Tuart Forestprotects the largest remaining tract of pure tuart forest in the world, with some trees between 300 and 400 years old and standing as high as 33 metres. Take a scenic drive or walk through this significant park before visiting another site of international importance just next door – the Vasse-Wonnerup Estuary. This area of wetlands supports thousands of waterbirds that can be viewed from the Malbup Bird Hide. Just before dusk, make your way back to Tuart Forest National Park with torch in hand to walk the Possum Night Spotlight Trail. This easy 1.5 kilometre interpretive trail gives you a chance to spot some of the local fauna, including the ringtail possum and grey kangaroo. Make Busselton your overnight stop or take the 30-minute drive to Bunbury. Both offer a good range of accommodation and dining options.
