An early start from Perth (Boorloo) will get you to the historic hamlet of Greenough in four and a half hours on the scenic Indian Ocean Drive or you can take your time and spend three days on the Everlastings Trail, which will bring you to Dongara (30-minutes south of Greenough). Take a drive through Greenough's coastal plains and stop to photograph the surreal ‘leaning trees’ sculpted by the prevailing southerly winds. Continue on to Northampton and return to the coast at the picturesque fishing village of Port Gregory. The harbour and swimming beach here are sheltered by the reef, offering a great spot for an afternoon swim or snorkel. The surrounding countryside is filled with a diverse array of wild orchids, including the donkey, bee, cowslip, spider, blue, shy, vanilla sun, Northampton midget and greenhood varieties. The remaining journey to Kalbarri takes just 45 minutes - take a look at the spectacular Hutt Lagoon (aka Pink Lake) on the way. Watch the sunset light up the rugged cliffs and witness the migration of humpback whales to their feeding grounds in the southern oceans (June to November). Between July and October, more than 1,100 varieties of Western Australian wildflowers set the surrounding plains and gorges of Kalbarri National Park ablaze with colour, including river gums, gold and orange banksias, grevilleas, kangaroo paws, featherflowers, starflowers, smoke bushes and eucalypts. To get a closer look at these blooms, and 400 million years of natural history, follow one of the park’s bushwalking trails, or take a cruise on the Murchison River. Return to Kalbarri to relax on the beaches of the coast and inlet. Take an afternoon stroll along the cliff tops, or try your luck at beach fishing to catch dinner.
