The morning can be spent relaxing in Kalgoorlie with a visit to local attractions. These include the Goldfields Museum, Hammond Park and Hannans North Tourist Mine. Travelling north on paved roads, take a short break at Niagara Dam before reaching Kookynie, where you can try your luck at finding gold. The ghost town of Gwalia, three hours by car from Kalgoorlie, is worth a detour. In the historic town you can still visit gold rush accommodation and shops. Even the former home of mine manager Herbert Hoover, who later led the fortunes of the United States as the 31st President, is well preserved. Today, the building serves as a bed and breakfast for travellers. If you are planning to travel the entire Golden Quest Discovery Trail, it's worth adding another day and staying overnight in Leonora or Gwalia. Tip: When travelling on the Golden Quest Discovery Trail, visitors can learn more about gold mining and visit abandoned mining towns. If travelling in an all-wheel drive, visitors to Menzies, approximately 130 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie, can turn to Lake Ballard (be aware, the last 50 kilometres from Menzies to Lake Ballard is unsealed). Here, you can admire the 'Inside Australia' exhibition by Antony Gormley – the largest outdoor gallery on earth. Here, stretching across 10 square kilometres, a collection of 51 individually cast black chromium steel sculptures stand against the dramatic backdrop of Lake Ballard's white salt plain. Each sculpture represents one of the local residents of Menzies. Stay overnight in either Kalgoorlie or Leonora.
