The Australian Imperial Forces (AIF), formed in 1914 during World War I, comprised volunteers from across Australia who served in campaigns such as Gallipoli, the Western Front, and the Middle East. Throughout the war, the AIF suffered significant casualties, with many of its members making the ultimate sacrifice. The AIF Cemetery at West Terrace serves as a final resting place for these courageous individuals, forever honouring their memory and the legacy they left behind. During the tour, we will explore the diverse stories of those buried in the cemetery, including the remarkable contributions of women and Indigenous Australians who served in the AIF. We will also pay special tribute to the Victoria Cross recipients laid to rest here, learning about their extraordinary acts of Valor and the circumstances that led to their recognition with the highest military decoration in the British and Commonwealth armed forces. This walk will provide an opportunity for twilight photographs over western suburbs and includes the Memorial Cross.
