The Golden Quest Discovery Trail strings together the region's scattered mining towns and heritage sites into one proper road trip. Kalgoorlie anchors the goldfields side of things, worth a stop in its own right rather than just a fuel break. Out past the towns, the red dirt keeps going long after the last building disappears.
