Marble caverns at the end of a wild mountain road
This shire holds its best surprise underground, a road through gorge country delivering you to caverns hollowed from marble, some of the most richly decorated chambers in the state. Tour the show caves, then surface into the tablelands proper, where the wind never really stops. Australia's first grid-connected wind farm went in near Crookwell in 1998, and turbines now stride the ridgelines against enormous skies. Some places save their best trick for last.
