A shearer's death gave Australia its unofficial anthem

Waltzing Matilda was born from tragedy at nearby Combo Waterhole in 1894, first performed at the North Gregory Hotel in 1895, and the story still echoes through the Waltzing Matilda Centre today. Lark Quarry holds something even older, the world's only known evidence of a dinosaur stampede, tracks preserved for 93 million years. Walk the Winton Music Fence, strung to be played like an instrument, or take in Arno's Wall, built from motorbikes and crockery. Nearby Opalton, Queensland's oldest opal field, adds boulder opal to the list of things worth digging for. Out here, the plains fill with wildlife at dawn and dusk.
