Yass

The explorer's hometown on the road to everywhere

Hamilton Hume, the first Australian-born explorer, chose Yass to come home to, and Cooma Cottage, his homestead on the town's edge, still stands for visitors to wander. The town he settled kept its looks: Comur Street runs wide and verandahed, one of the handsomest main streets in the state, with the river path threading quietly behind. For the outdoors, drive twenty minutes to Burrinjuck, a drowned valley turned enormous lake, stretching across sixty kilometres of old river gorge. Some towns are named after what they export. Yass just quietly kept its explorer.
