If you’re craving a dip in the Indian Ocean or a coastal panorama photo opportunity, head for Hangover Bay or Thirsty Point. On the way south to the Pinnacles, take a short detour to encounter some of the oldest living fossils on Earth – the stromatolites and strombalites of Lake Thetis. The road into the Pinnacles Desert is sealed and there is a car park within walking distance of the limestone spires. Opt to walk or drive through the Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park. Retrace your journey to Perth via the Indian Ocean Drive and stop for a mini adventure in Lancelin – sandboarding on Western Australia’s largest sand dunes or climb to the summit and watch the colour show as the sun sets into the Indian Ocean. From here, it’s just over one-and-a-half-hour’s drive, joining Wanneroo Road and the Mitchell Freeway, to bring you back to Perth. Note: Lancelin sand dunes are a popular playground for four-wheel drivers, bikers and dune buggy racing enthusiasts so take care.
