Jindabyne

A whole town sleeps beneath this lake

Lake Jindabyne isn't natural: it was flooded in the 1960s as part of the Snowy Scheme, and the original town of Jindabyne still sits somewhere on the bottom, its residents having watched their streets disappear before rebuilding on the hill above. The lake that drowned one town now serves the region well, trout fishing and sailing filling it through the warmer months. The rebuilt town above makes the natural base for reaching Thredbo and Perisher, twenty minutes further into the mountains. Some towns get founded once. This one got founded twice.
