This is Queensland's true outback, a stretch of the state so vast that Longreach, Winton, Birdsville and the Gulf all count as neighbours despite being hours apart. Follow the Birdsville Track or the Matilda Way from Cunnamulla to Karumba, and the drive itself becomes the point. Every small town out here has its own story worth stopping for: a dinosaur stampede in one, a ghost light in another, a lava tube system in a third. Windows down, red dirt in the rear-view, not a traffic light for hours. Out here, the outback isn't a place you visit, it's a place you feel.
